Personalize Your Bedroom with Unique Painting Ideas

Just Add Stripes

Striped walls can add texture, length, and height to your bedroom. Creating a striped effect directly above the bed frame or on one wall , with alternating shades of the same color, only can add a dimensional effect to the entire room.

Horizontal stripes draw the eye longways, lengthening the room.

Vertical stripes draw the eye up, and can create height in a room with a low ceiling, or if you’d like to draw the eye to a particular piece of artwork or mirror.

Zig-zagging stripes are great for kids room’s and nurseries. Zig-zag stripes create a fun, playful look. They’re great when done in a bold, bright color, or in alternating rainbow colors.

Color Blocking

Color blocking is when you place a bright color directly next to another color, or a few other colors, in order to make the colors pop.  This can be done by picking a pair of colors, like above with the dark blue and white, or a trio of colors, to have stacked on top of one another to produce a bold, powerful look.

Ombre Coloring

Ombre is when you begin with a dark color that gradually fades to light. You can begin with the dark closer to the floorboards, at the roof, or from the side of the wall. Ombre coloring is great for creating a lighting effect in a room. Ombre can be done very gradually (as shown below), or in a more defined, patterned fashion (as shown above).

Stenciling is a great way to add a personalized, custom feel to your bedroom. Even small detailing on the wall can add a customized element to any room in the house. Stenciling can be done by hand, by taping off areas in the pattern of your choosing, or can be purchased in faux wallpaper press-on form.

There are many ways to elevate and customize an intimate room like your bedroom. Color patterns, color blocking, patterning, and stenciling are just a few of the ways to change the entire feel of your room.

Inspiring Colors to Invigorate Your Kitchen

If you’re like us, you spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The kitchen is generally a home’s gathering place—somewhere the family can all come together and engage in one of life’s most important activities: eating! Clutter and drab colors can make this area seem cramped and dingy… but, with the right color tips you can create a space that the whole family will love to congregate in.

Subtle Color Splashes

Not everyone is a fan of the bold, “look-at-me” kitchen color schemes on cabinets and walls. That’s okay! Even simply adding a slight color backsplash behind the stove, or on one kitchen wall can give the kitchen a new, sophisticated feel. Adding softer colors, like light grey or an earthy beige can soften the space and give it a more comfortable feel.

Bold Color Accents

Perhaps you are a fan of bright and bold kitchens. Firey reds, bright yellows, and intense oranges are fun accent colors to use on cupboards and walls behind appliances. These colors are meant to be uplifting and can infuse the atmosphere of the kitchen with a playful, fun feel. Bright color pops work best when paired with earth toned walls, floors, and countertops.

Ethereal Colors to Calm

If your kitchen has white marble or granite counter tops, blue can be a wonderful accentuating color for the kitchen. The color blue is meant to be calming and serene, so if you’d like to create a feeling of peace within your kitchen then blue is the color for you. Another great way to incorporate blues into the kitchen is through the use of tiling above the stove, using an array of porcelain pieces or shattered sea glass.

Dark Framing Colors

Color can be used to draw the eye to a particular area within a room. Darker colors used around the frame of the window, fridge, or doorway can  give the kitchen a defined, dramatic look. Framing colors generally look best when paired with a neutral wall, stainless steel appliances, and dark countertops.

Five Questions to Help you Choose the Right Interior Paint

If you have ever walked into the paint section at the Home Depot, you know that it can be a bit overwhelming. With hundreds of colors to choose from, multitudes of different brands, finishes, glosses, and coatings —it can be nearly impossible to make a decision.

That’s why we’ve come up with a few questions to arm yourself with before heading out to make a decision about which colors to paint your interior walls.

What room(s) are you painting in your home? Will there be kids, pets, or a great deal of activity in that room?

Painting a master bedroom and painting a kids playroom can be two different endeavors, with the need for different types of paint and finish. If there is a large amount of traffic and activity in the room that you are planning on painting, it’s important that you choose paint that will be relatively easy to clean, and stain resistant. In these areas, it is best to choose a paint with a high gloss, or semi-gloss. For rooms with less activity, say, the guest bedroom, you can feel free to use any paint from flat to high gloss finish.

How sensitive are you and your family to the smell of paint?

If you find that you are fairly sensitive to odor, then you should plan on using water-based latex paints. These types of paints exude little to no odor in comparison to oil-based paints. Additionally, they generally adhere well to interior surfaces and are easily cleaned.

Do you want the room to look bigger?

If you have smaller rooms in the house that you wish were a bit larger, choosing the right paint can help create that illusion. Lighter colors will create an airy, open feel in the room. Darker colors create a more cozy, intimate feel.

How much time do you want to spend on this particular paint project?

For most families, it is important that the paint job is completed within a few days so that they can get back to life as usual in their home. If you have limited time, or just want to finish the job fast, then you should think about using a “paint and primer” all in one product. With these products you’ll need to apply fewer coats, which cuts down the drying time and overall time spent on the job.

 How often do you repaint?

If you like to freshen up the color and feel of your rooms every few years, then it doesn’t matter so much the type of paint that you use. However, if you’re hoping to have a paint that lasts, you’ll need a durable, top quality, 100% latex interior paint.

Three Painting Projects to Consider Doing Right Now

Summer is quickly approaching, and that means more time spent outside. After all of Utah’s winter snow storms, the exterior of your home is likely in need of a few touch ups. But, not to worry. Not all painting projects have to be large-scale endeavors. There some simple projects that can greatly improve the esthetics of your home.  Here are a few of our favorites that will take only a day or two to complete.

1. Repaint the Front Door

The front door is the first thing that people see when approaching your home, and you know what they say about first impressions. If the paint on your front door is chipping or faded, then that sets the expectation for the rest of your home. Re-painting the front door is an easy project to tackle, and can change the feel of the entire exterior of your house. First of all, it’s important to repair any damage and apply a quality primer. When it comes to choosing the paint color, a bold color can help your home stand out among the rest.

2. Re-stain or Repaint the Deck

In the Salt Lake City area, right before summer is the perfect time to revamp the appearance of your deck. The deck is the social hub of your home, it’s where you’ll host guests and have BBQ’s all summer long. First thing to consider when redoing a deck is to invest in a quality commercial cleaner to remove all mildew buildup and other gunk that may be present. Power washing can improve the finish of the deck, as well as sanding or repairing any broken boards. Finally, a quality re-staining job will give you that beautiful outdoor environment that you and your family will enjoy spending time in.

3. Touch ups on the Exterior

Summer is a good time to tackle small touch ups so that they do not become larger problems when the weather turns sour again. The best way to identify problem spots is by making note of areas where there is peeling, flaking, or blistering paint. If these problems are confined to only one area, then it’s easy to fix by chipping off damaged paint, reapplying primer, and then repainting. If these areas are not dealt with, they can continue to spread and wreck havoc on the look of your home.
